VALUE(S) is Monique's senior body of work on display at the Balzer Contemporary Edge Gallery. This project is based on the 8 values found within the Mormon Young Women's Motto: faith, divine nature, individual worth, knowledge, choice and accountability, good works, integrity and virtue. Each of the two-sided wooden paper doll-like figures depicts the toxic and beneficial dichotomous nature of one of these values. Success and failure in reaching these goals is one of the earliest times a female in the religion will begin to experience a loss of self worth and an increase in shame and otherness within the religious community. These consequences can have long lasting toxic effects on the individual and their ability to assimilate into the culture.
